Research Methods:

Conducting Observational Research Seminar

NFSC 600: Research Methods

Skill Area: Research Methods

What I learned: In this assignment I learned how to teach the relevant concerns in the conception, design, and implementation of observational research in health promotion to a class of graduate students while being evaluated by a professor.  I developed effective communication skills while working in a group.

Reflection to assignment: I worked with two other graduate students to design a presentation that would effectively educate a class of graduate students about observational research.  I learned that I work well as a leader within a group setting.  I am an effective communicator and am always willing to devote myself fully to each project. This reflects in the way that group members come to me with questions and clarification and for ideas to creatively present materials.  I am good at thinking of ways to promote discussion and involvement of audience members throughout presentations.   I enjoy speaking in front of groups.

Relevance to profession: As a graduate student, I will have to design a research project.  Knowing the details of a variety of research methods, such as observational research will be important in research design and effective implementation.   Presenting information to a class of peers and being evaluated by the professor is great practice for a future in dietetics, where I will frequently be asked to give lectures regarding nutrition and related topics.
